BLACKFEET CULTURAL WELCOME CENTER
Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes that cradle the ancestral lands of the Blackfeet Nation, our conceptual design for the Blackfeet Cultural Welcome Center is a testament to the rich tapestry of history, tradition and community that defines the Blackfeet people. This visionary architectural endeavor seeks to seamlessly blend modern functionality with profound cultural significance, creating a dynamic space that serves as a gateway to the past while embracing the future.
Informed by deep respect for the Blackfeet heritage, our design draws inspiration from the natural surroundings, incorporating elements that echo the harmony between the Tribe and the land as well as very specific traditional culture. Every facet of the Blackfeet Cultural Welcome Center reflects the community’s resilience and pride, from the striking exterior that mirrors the majestic mountains to the intricate interior details that pay homage to traditional craftsmanship.
This center is envisioned not merely as a physical structure but as a living embodiment of the Blackfeet spirit. It is a space where stories are told through architectural nuances, where art becomes a vessel for cultural expression, and where every guest is greeted with the warmth of tradition. The design fosters a sense of inclusivity, inviting all to engage in a cultural dialogue that transcends time and fosters a deeper understanding of the Blackfeet way of life.
Striving to create more than just a building, our design team aspired to craft a sanctuary that celebrates the essence of Blackfeet identity. Through collaboration with the community, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to green and sustainable practices, the conceptual design aims to cultivate a space where heritage and modernity converge, inviting all who enter to share in the beauty and resilience of the Blackfeet culture.
The exterior design of the building reflects traditional Blackfeet culture while also looking forward to the future through more contemporary design. The materials and forms of the building blend in with the surrounding landscape while creating a dramatic focal point to stand out and draw visitors in.
The primary gathering space at the southeast corner of the building is designed as a traditional Blackfeet Lodge, utilizing the mountain forms near the base representing the earth, the horizontal lines near the top representing sky, and the small circles or dots at the top representing the stars, which will be constructed as circular LED lights to appear as stars at night.
The Exhibit Hall will feature a mix of permanent and rotating exhibits with hands-on learning opportunities, as well as video displays. In addition, the Welcome Center will include a gift shop and café with indoor and outdoor seating.
An outdoor interactive Lodge Camp with walking trails has been designed west of the new building to educate visitors about traditional Blackfeet dwellings, lifestyle and culture.
The project will be located at Buffalo Calf Campground, which is approximately 10 miles southwest of Browning and 2 miles northeast of East Glacier Park on the north side of U.S. Route 2.
