MUSCOGEE (CREEK) NATION TRIBAL COURTHOUSE
In 2018, we developed the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Tribal Master Plan, which included a new Courthouse. Funding for the new Courthouse, along with other buildings, was secured in early 2022, our team was selected to complete full A/E services for all projects concurrently with a complete overhaul of the existing site. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt decision , the initial design had to be modified to accommodate the significant increase in additional caseload. The District Court, located on the ground floor, includes a large waiting room, two trial courtrooms, two hearing courtrooms with a conference room, court clerk space, judges’ offices, jury deliberation rooms, attorney client meeting rooms, witness waiting rooms, adult and juvenile inmate holding areas, resource library, and various additional support spaces. The Supreme Court, located on the second floor, includes a ceremonial courtroom, court clerk space, staff attorney office, a public law library, conference rooms, secure file storage, judges’ break room and various additional support spaces.
Reminiscent of a ceremonial fire where council members met, deliberated and ultimately forged unifying decisions, the design team chose to frame the space with bold forms that create a unique outlet for the community to share ideas, discuss various topics or just enjoy good company. A representation of the ceremonial fire, surrounded by traditional shade structures, will be placed prominently beside the main entry walkway. It will be flanked by the building itself, with a wall feature reaching out to embrace the fire and seating. New Fire Native has incorporated the ceremonial fire into every aspect of the design. The fire element represents energy, a tool for transformation and connection to personal power.
With the design team’s choice of stone, metal panels and cast stone palette, the building’s exterior design aesthetic speaks both to the gravitas of the law and its foundational importance in society. The various patterns incorporated into the hardscape elements echo the beautifully intricate patterns of Muscogee arts and pottery, encouraging people to navigate the surrounding site. The two-story 43,514 SF building overlooks the exterior fire pit in the courtyard which connects Muscogee (Creek) Nation traditions and its modern-day judiciary. New Fire Native and the Nation are working with a Native artist to create a large, custom artwork to greet visitors when they enter the two‑story lobby.
Due to the ripple effects caused by the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt decision, construction completion of the Courthouse and Lighthorse Administration buildings have been prioritized.
